Fix the Foundation First
Most gun owners learned to shoot from whoever handed them their first firearm. Bad habits picked up that way do not stay small. They grow under stress and get harder to undo the longer you practice them. Level 1 corrects them early, with an instructor watching every string of fire.

What Level 1 Covers
- Stance. How body position affects every shot.
- Grip. The fundamental most shooters get wrong without knowing it.
- Sight alignment. What your eyes actually do under pressure.
- Trigger control. The biggest single cause of missed shots.
- Target transitions. Moving between targets without losing your grip or sights.
- Loading, unloading, and malfunctions. Repeated until it stops requiring thought.
- A personal debrief. What improved and a practice plan to take to any range.
What to Bring and Wear
Bring your handgun if you own one. Wear closed-toe shoes and a crew-neck shirt, since hot brass finds open collars. Long pants are a good idea for the same reason.
Why a Three-Hour Fundamentals Course Works
An hour is enough to learn the basics. Three hours is enough to repeat them until they start to stick. Level 1 is built around repetition with feedback: you shoot, Mike or assistant instructor Greg Massari tells you exactly what happened, you adjust, and you shoot again. By the end of the course most students can see the difference on their targets.
The course runs outdoors, at the private range in Boynton Beach or at Suburban Protector’s own 1.25-acre range in Okeechobee, which gives the class room to work on target transitions and malfunction drills that are harder to run in a narrow indoor lane. It is a short drive from Delray Beach and Boca Raton.
A Typical Level 1 Session
- Safety briefing and gear check. Range rules, firearm check, and a quick talk about each student’s experience and goals.
- Grip and stance. Dry practice first, then live fire to confirm.
- Sight alignment and trigger control. Slow, precise strings to isolate the trigger press.
- Malfunctions and reloads. What to do when the gun does not fire, until it becomes automatic.
- Target transitions. Moving from one target to the next while keeping your fundamentals.
- Personal debrief. What improved, what to practice, and what comes next.

Level 1 Compared With a Private Lesson
A private lesson is one-on-one and fully customized. Level 1 is a structured small-group course with a set curriculum and more total trigger time. Many students do one private lesson to get comfortable, then take Level 1 to build consistency. Others with some experience start directly in Level 1.
What Students Say
Delray Beach Firearm Training is run by Mike Kneuer and Suburban Protector. These are real Google reviews left for Suburban Protector by students who trained with Mike.
I took a shooting course with Suburban Protector run by Mike, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. We went over the basics like proper grip, unholstering technique, and aiming, then moved into practical self-defense drills that really built my confidence. Mike’s instruction was clear, professional, and easy to understand, no matter your experience level. He puts a big emphasis on gun safety and proper handling, which I really appreciated. I left the course with way more knowledge and confidence than I came with, and had a great time doing it.
I came in as a complete beginner with zero experience and honestly a little nervous, but the team at Suburban Protector made me feel comfortable right away. They explained everything clearly, were very patient, and focused on real-world safety and confidence. By the end of the session, I felt way more capable and informed. Highly recommend for anyone starting from scratch.
Common Questions
Who is Level 1 for?
New owners who want to start correctly and intermediate shooters who know something is off but cannot diagnose it themselves.
Do I need experience?
No prior course is required. If you have never fired a gun, a private lesson first can make Level 1 more comfortable, but it is not mandatory.
What comes after Level 1?
Protector Level 2, which adds holster draws, movement, cover, and decision making.
Where does Level 1 run?
At the private outdoor range in Boynton Beach, close to Delray Beach and Boca Raton. The exact location is shared once your seat is confirmed.
How much ammunition should I bring?
Mike will confirm the round count when you book. Plan on more than you would use in a one-hour lesson.
Reserve a Level 1 Seat
Tell Mike where you live, what you want to work on, and when you are free. He will reply personally to set up a time and a range.
