Built for the Way You Actually Live

A large share of our students in Delray Beach and Boca Raton are retirees. They live in communities like Kings Point, the Villages of Oriole, and High Point in Delray, and Century Village in West Boca. Some bought a handgun after moving to Florida. Some inherited one. Some have owned a revolver for decades and have not fired it in years.

What they want is not a tactical course. They want to know that they can load, unload, and shoot the gun they own safely, that it will work if they ever need it, and that it is stored where the grandkids cannot reach it when the family comes down for the season.

That is what these lessons are for. They are private, so nobody is waiting on you, and they are booked as regular private shooting lessons at $125 per hour.

What We Adjust For

Grip strength and arthritis

Racking the slide on a semi-automatic pistol is the most common struggle. There are techniques that use body mechanics instead of hand strength, and some pistols are simply easier to work than others. We will try both.

Recoil

Smaller guns kick harder, which surprises people. A slightly larger pistol or a lighter load can make shooting comfortable instead of painful. You will feel the difference in the first few rounds.

Vision

If you wear reading glasses or bifocals, the front sight can blur. We work through which glasses to wear and whether different sights would help.

Hearing

Good ear protection is provided, and we use it on every shot. If you already have hearing loss, it matters even more, and we can talk about electronic hearing protection.

Revolver or Semi-Automatic?

Many older owners have a revolver because it was the standard choice for decades. Revolvers are simple to check and operate, but the double-action trigger is heavy and the cylinder holds fewer rounds. Semi-automatic pistols have lighter triggers and hold more, but the slide can be hard to rack and malfunctions take practice to clear.

Neither is the right answer for everyone. If you are still deciding, a try before you buy session lets you shoot several of each before you spend money.

When the Grandkids Visit

Winter season brings family to Delray Beach and Boca Raton, and that is when storage questions get serious. Florida’s safe storage law, section 790.174, Florida Statutes, applies when a minor could gain access to a loaded firearm. Lessons cover the practical side: quick-access safes, lock boxes, trigger locks, and a simple routine for when visitors arrive.

For Clubs and Communities

If your community or club would like a group session, we also run group firearm training and Stop the Bleed classes for HOAs and neighborhood groups. Tell Mike your headcount and goals.

What Students Say

Delray Beach Firearm Training is run by Mike Kneuer and Suburban Protector. These are real Google reviews left for Suburban Protector by students who trained with Mike.

★★★★★
I am fairly new to shooting and was nervous about handling a gun. Mike listened to all of my concerns and brought me in with all of that in mind. He showed me everything I needed to know and made me feel comfortable throughout the lesson. He provided all of the equipment and let me shoot three different guns, explaining the difference between each. It was well worth the time and money, giving me the confidence to move forward with potentially making my first purchase. I will continue to consult with him throughout my growth with shooting.

Common Questions

Am I too old to learn to shoot?

No. Age matters much less than comfort and patience. We set the pace around you, take breaks whenever you like, and stop when you have had enough for the day.

What if I cannot rack the slide on my pistol?

That is very common. We will teach techniques that rely on body mechanics rather than hand strength, and if it is still a struggle, we can try pistols that are easier to work.

Do I need to own a gun?

No. A training firearm, eye protection, and ear protection are included with private lessons. If you own a gun, bring it unloaded and cased.

Where do lessons take place?

At Palm Beach Shooting Center in Lake Worth Beach, an indoor, air-conditioned range, or at a private outdoor range in Boynton Beach. Many seniors prefer the indoor range in summer.
