Try a Handgun Before You Buy

The most expensive first-gun mistake is buying the wrong one. Shoot several handguns side by side with an instructor first, then buy the one that actually fits your hand and your life.

Several handguns laid out for a student to compare before buying

Why Try First

Gun counters are good at showing you guns. They are not set up to let you shoot five of them with someone watching your grip and telling you why one works and another does not. That is how people end up with a tiny pistol that hurts to shoot, a gun with a slide they cannot rack, or a revolver with a trigger they cannot pull smoothly. A lot of them go back and buy a second gun.

This session fixes that before you spend money. It is booked as a regular private lesson, $125 per hour, with training firearms, targets, and eye and ear protection included.

How the Session Works

  1. Tell Mike what you want the gun for. Home defense, carry, the range, or all three. Mention your hand size or any grip or recoil concerns.
  2. Safety and handling first. You learn how each type of handgun works before you shoot anything.
  3. Shoot several handguns. Compact and full-size pistols and a revolver, depending on what is available that day, with Mike beside you.
  4. Compare what you felt. Mike explains why some guns worked better for you, so you know what to look for at the store.
  5. Buy with confidence. You leave knowing the size and type of handgun that fits you.

What You Will Compare

Size

Smaller is easier to carry and harder to shoot. Larger is easier to shoot and harder to hide. Feeling the difference is the whole point.

Revolver or pistol

Simplicity and a heavy trigger versus capacity and a slide to rack. Both have a place.

Grip fit

Whether your trigger finger reaches properly and your hand fits the grip without strain.

Recoil and sights

How much the gun moves when it fires, and whether you can see the sights clearly.

What a Student Said

Delray Beach Firearm Training is run by Mike Kneuer and Suburban Protector. These are real Google reviews left for Suburban Protector by students who trained with Mike.

★★★★★
I am fairly new to shooting and was nervous about handling a gun. Mike listened to all of my concerns and brought me in with all of that in mind. He showed me everything I needed to know and made me feel comfortable throughout the lesson. He provided all of the equipment and let me shoot three different guns, explaining the difference between each. It was well worth the time and money, giving me the confidence to move forward with potentially making my first purchase. I will continue to consult with him throughout my growth with shooting.

Common Questions

Do I need to own a gun to book this?

No. That is the point. Training firearms are provided.

How many guns will I shoot?

Usually several, depending on what is available that day and how much time the hour allows. Tell Mike in advance if there is a specific model you want to try, and he will let you know whether it is possible.

Will you tell me which gun to buy?

Mike will tell you which size and type of handgun worked best for you and why. The final choice is yours.

Is this good for seniors or women with smaller hands?

Yes. Grip fit, slide strength, and recoil are exactly what this session tests. See also our training for seniors and women’s training pages.

Try Before You Buy
